Hostilities have intensified along the Thailand-Cambodia border, with civilians on both sides affected by renewed violence. Explosions and fighting have forced Thai villagers to seek cover and Cambodian refugees to take shelter in Buddhist temples. 

The conflict, which previously displaced around 300,000 people and killed dozens during five days of fighting in July, stems from a century-old border dispute over territory and ancient temples. Both governments accuse each other of targeting civilians and have not indicated any willingness to de-escalate the situation.

On the Thailand-Cambodia border, civilians again find themselves on the front line in the latest flare-up of violence between the two countries. A nearby explosion sends Thai villagers running for cover here. On the Cambodian side, refugees from the fighting take shelter at a Buddhist temple. It's not the first time they've had to do this. Five days of fighting in July killed dozens and displaced around 300,000 people on both sides of the border. Because of the aggressive actions by the Thai side, who opened fire first and invaded Cambodia's sovereignty, Cambodian forces have been left with no choice but to use their right of self-defence to fight against the illegal invasion. Thai operations focus solely on military targets to degrade Cambodia or to actually reduce the ability of the Cambodian military capabilities while Cambodia's use of weapons continues to be directed at innocent civilians, civilian sites and medical facilities. As civilians sit out the fighting in shelters, these are in Thailand, neither government has given any indication it's willing to back down. The conflict centres on a century-old disagreement over borders mapped during French colonial times and who has sovereignty over some ancient temples. Bernard Smith, Al Jazeera.
