In Kyiv, residents sought shelter in metro stations as air raid sirens became more frequent, while on the front lines, Ukrainian forces continued to face intense pressure from Russian troops around Pokrovsk. Diplomatic efforts to end the conflict have so far made little progress.

At bomb sites like this one in Zaporizhia, every second counts. Emergency crews search through debris after overnight strikes on Thursday. Then an upper floor collapses, forcing rescue work to pause. I read online that ballistic missiles had been launched from Crimea and I realised they were heading our way. There were four explosions and then the fifth missile struck right here. I held my child close. Within seconds the power went out, dust in the air and children started crying. I was terrified. It was truly frightening. Some people are still trapped under the rubble. My neighbours lost their apartment. Local officials say children were among those injured in the attack on this residential area. Russia is also continuing to target Ukraine's energy grid ahead of winter. Nearly every region in Ukraine is facing emergency power cuts after overnight strikes. In the capital Kiev, more residents are sheltering in metro stations as air raid sirens sound more frequently. And the skies above the city fill with missiles and drones. It's too hard. I'm afraid to even go to sleep. And when I do sleep, it's not really sleep. Because every half an hour, every 40 minutes, I wake up and worry whether there is an air raid alert or not, whether something is flying overhead or not, whether there is an explosion. You get sick more often with this routine. Not sleeping, worrying and being constantly stressed. Even when nothing hits, the constant fear is taking a toll. On the front line, Ukrainian forces are struggling to hold back Russian troops around Pokrovsk, a city that has been under pressure for months. The most difficult situation right now is in the Pokrovsk direction. As in previous weeks, this is where the fighting is most intense, with a strong concentration of Russian forces. Both sides continue launching missile and drone attacks as the front line slowly shifts in Russia's favor. And despite new diplomatic moves, White House efforts to secure a deal to end the war have so far yielded little progress. Zin Basravi, Al Jazeera.
