FOX 5 DC's Josh Rosenthal spoke to several D.C. residents following a shooting that left two West Virginia National Guard members critically wounded on Wednesday.

A shooting occurred near the White House at the intersection of 17th and I Street Northwest, prompting a large law enforcement response and a temporary lockdown of the White House due to its proximity. Witnesses described hearing gunshots, seeing people—including children—fleeing the area, and hearing cries for help.

Residents and witnesses expressed shock and sadness over the incident, calling it senseless and unexpected for Washington, DC. The area, known for its restaurants, businesses, and hotels, remained an active crime scene with streets blocked off as authorities continued their investigation.

And this shooting happening right near the White House. So many people heard or witnessed this horrific crime and the aftermath. Fox 5's Josh Rosenthal is live now at 16th and 9th Northwest with reaction from people who were near today's shooting. Josh? Hey guys, right off the bat, I want to give you an idea of the chaos that broke out just as all this was unfolding. Give it a listen. I heard boom, boom, two times. And then the Uber driver said, why are all these people running? So then I look out the window and it's little, little children, adults, running, children on both sides of the street, running in the opposite direction. The supervision is saying to the children, go, go, run. And then I heard help, help in the direction of the shooting. Now I want to give you an idea of where exactly all this took place, because I think it's important context. Follow me in this direction as we carefully cross the street. We're standing in the intersection of 16th and I right now. One more block down this road here, down I, that is 17th and I, that is where the shootings took place. And as you can see, there's still a large law enforcement presence up that way tonight. Nowhere near what we saw earlier, but they're up there. Now, just over in this direction, just a few blocks down there, there's the White House, which was put on lockdown earlier today because of its proximity to where this all took place. This area is surrounded by restaurants, businesses, hotels, and that leads a lot of people tonight to sound like this. I'm so sad. It's senseless. It shouldn't be like this. It's shocking. I would never expect to see this in DC. You're leaving work, walking to catch the red line. You happen to see this. What's your reaction to that? It's pretty sad. It's sad what's happening in the world. It's really sad. As you can see, the stretch of I Street behind me still blocked off and an active crime scene here tonight. Yes. Yeah. Pretty unbelievable.
