The first major heat wave of the summer begins in the Plains and Midwest on Friday, and lasts through the weekend. The Northeast will see the heat and humidity peak early next week, with the heat wave lasting into Wednesday and Thursday for some.

A major heat wave is forecast to affect large parts of the United States, beginning in the Plains and Midwest before extending into the Northeast. Temperatures in cities like Scottsbluff, Nebraska, and Minneapolis may break long-standing records, with some locations expected to feel as hot as 105 degrees Fahrenheit, even in the shade. 

The heat and humidity will intensify as the system moves eastward, with above-average temperatures expected to persist for several days. High pressure is expected to keep the heat lingering, particularly in the Northeast, raising concerns about prolonged exposure to dangerous conditions.

As we look at Chicago, this is what it's gonna feel like as we head into our Saturday. It's gonna feel like it's 105 here and that is in the shade. In the direct sunlight, it's gonna feel even hotter than that. So today, majority of that really big warmth going north is gonna be into the Plains. We are still above average for the most part here on the Northeast, but the real heat gets into the Northeast as we head into our kind of Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. There it is tomorrow, Nashville up to Detroit. It's gonna feel like 97 degrees there.
