Children living with autism have been given the opportunity to hang out cricket stars. It's part of the programme helping kids build skills, confidence and a love for the game.

A cricket event in East Perth brought together over 200 young people with autism, providing them the opportunity to play at the WACA and interact with prominent cricket stars. The initiative, now in its seventh year, is a collaboration between the WA Cricket Foundation and the Autism Association of WA, focusing on making cricket accessible and enjoyable for all participants.

The program has seen positive outcomes, with more than 40 players registering with cricket clubs for the current season following last year's event. The Autism Association has partnered with 12 community cricket clubs across Western Australia and aims to expand its reach, encouraging lifelong engagement with the sport among young people with autism.

Autism is almost a silent disease that people can't really see and judgement can be made on certain behaviours and mannerisms and we just want to make sure that cricket is a sport that includes everybody and is a comfortable place for everybody. The program's a collaboration between the WA Cricket Foundation and the Autism Association of WA. He's never been out on the Whacker before like most people so it's a good enjoyment, yeah, it's a good day. I don't think he would do sport if we didn't have these inclusive programs. The program's now in its seventh year and the Autism Association's already partnered with 12 community cricket clubs across the state but it's hoping to continue growing its reach. This might be their own experience but it might also trigger an interest that they might then go down to one of our clubs that are really geared up to support families living with autism and they might have a lifelong love of cricket which would be amazing.
