Delegates representing more than 170 countries have gathered in Nairobi, Kenya, for the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly. The meeting comes as the world faces simultaneous crises, including climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation, and pollution, which experts describe as a global emergency.

Leaders at the assembly emphasized the need for international cooperation and investment in sustainable solutions to achieve economic gains, reduce poverty, and promote climate justice. The event, running from 8th to 12th December, aims to deliver actionable solutions to these pressing environmental and development challenges.

Delegates from more than 170 countries are meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, for the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly at a time when climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation and pollution are converging into what experts warn is a global emergency. If we invest in a stable climate, if we invest in a healthy nature, if we invest in good and fertile lands, if we invest in a pollution-free future, then the world can enjoy significant economic gains, avoid millions of premature deaths, lift hundreds of millions of people out of poverty and hunger, deliver greater equity and climate justice, and so much more. The executive directors stress that no country can tackle the crisis alone and called for cooperation across borders and sectors to secure a healthy, pollution-free future. From failed harvests to destructive floods, from intensifying storms to conflict worsened by resource scarcity, Africans are paying the price for a crisis they did not create. Our task is to ensure that every investment in industry, in infrastructure and technology reinforces resilience, protects nature and creates opportunities for people. Excellencies, environmental action and economic transformation must move together. We can decouple growth from emissions and pollution, creating new jobs, industries and markets, but this transformation must be fair, accessible and also affordable. The 7th Assembly, running from the 8th to 12th December, aims to deliver real solutions to real-world problems.
