In Asia, cities such as Seoul and Tokyo observed the new year with traditional gongs, though Tokyo's Shibuya district canceled its countdown for security reasons. Meanwhile, a Croatian town continued its annual tradition of a new year lunch, featuring music, dancing, and a chilly midday swim.

As is tradition, countries of Oceania are the first to see in the new year. Auckland's 328-metre-tall Sky Tower is the perfect launching pad for the 2,500 fireworks that lit up New Zealand's skies. In neighbouring Australia, crowds gathered to commemorate the Bondi Beach terror attacks on the 14th of December, in which 15 people were killed, before seeing in 2026. Asian countries ushered in the new year with almighty gongs like here in Seoul, or here in Tokyo in Japan. The Shibuya district, though, had to cancel its new year countdown for a sixth year in a row due to security concerns. In Croatia, meanwhile, it's still 2025, but this small town has an unusual tradition. This is the 26th edition of the celebration of our new year lunch. We were the first to start this tradition in 2000, to celebrate going from one millennia to another. Traditional music and conga dancing are on the menu, as well as a midday swim for the bravest of the party. At this time of year, the temperature is around one degree Celsius, an original way to start the new year with a cool head.
