Corn farmers near Cincinnati are contending with lower yields and higher moisture levels in their crops this season. The harvest is progressing ahead of schedule despite late planting, but farmers are relying on dryers to reduce corn moisture from 27% to the market standard of 15%.

Unpredictable weather, including both drought and untimely rain, has complicated the harvest process. Farmers note that even with modern equipment and best practices, the final outcome is largely determined by weather conditions beyond their control.

off 40 bushel and acre. It may be hands off due to automation, but it's all hands on deck right now to get corn out of the field. A lot further ahead of schedule than what I thought we would be for as late as the crop was planted. I thought it would be a late harvest, but all in all, we're moving along, I think, pretty well. Roger Weinmiller took me for a ride in a combine while he worked on a field near Blanchester this week. We're doing what they call dumping on the go. It allows the combine to keep harvesting all the time and never have to stop. And they are always on the go. But being in the cab of a combine is a place that he finds comfort. I kind of like harvest a little bit better than I do planting season because this time of year you see the rabbits running around, you see the air run through the field. This is to see nature at its best. It's just kind of your time to be to yourself and clear your head. Once the corn comes out, it's time to dry it for market. To be able to take it to the market, corn needs to be at 15%. We're drying corn at now. It's showing it's at 27% moisture and it's coming out at 15. Even with the drought this fall, farmers are having to use dryers to bring down the moisture percentage. Moisture and rain, something they don't want right now. The amount of rain we get at harvest time makes things difficult to get the product out of the field. At the end of the day, what ends up in the silos is out of their hands. The farmer can use the newest and greatest technology machinery-wise, seed-wise, fertilizer and stuff like that there and use the best practices possible. But at the end of the day, it's out of your control because it's all up to Mother Nature. If you get just the right amount of rain or too much rain, not enough sunshine, too much sunshine.
