The nominees are largely celebrity-driven podcasts, while more political and controversial shows were left off the list, reflecting broader trends in the entertainment industry.

The Golden Globes is breaking into the world of podcasts with a brand new best podcast category. This week, six podcasts became the first ever nominated for a Golden Globe. The nominees include Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, Call Her Daddy, Good Hang with Amy Poehler, the Mel Robbins podcast, Smart Lists, and Up First by NPR. Business writer for Hollywood Reporter Caitlin Houston joins me now. Caitlin, great to be with you. The Golden Globes has spent the past several years trying to rebuild its reputation after an LA Times report exposed ethical, financial issues, as well as lack of diversity. Many are calling this new podcast category nothing more than a money grab and that the Golden Globes are meant to honor the best in TV and movies, not all media. What are you hearing about this? Well, what they said off the bat was that this category was introduced in part to recognize the popularity of podcasts, but also about how podcasts are increasingly becoming just like TV as YouTube is one of the most popular platforms and as people are consuming them more and more, you know, on YouTube or on their smartphones or watching via video. I have heard some of the outcry, but I think that podcasts are increasingly becoming part of the entertainment conversation, and that's also part of the mix. Now, the podcasts that receive these nominations are also kind of interesting. Call Her Daddy, Good Hang with Amy Poehler, and the one that stood out to us in the news business was Up First by NPR, which is a news headline podcast. What do you make of these nominations and the ones who were notably not on the list? The nominations were really interesting because we did see a shortlist, which included a lot of political podcasts, both from the conservative side and from the liberal side. So we had stuff like Pod Save America, we also had Tucker Carlson, we had Joe Rogan, somewhere in between, and none of those were selected as nominees. What we got instead were a lot of these celebrity personality-driven podcasts, which are very popular, but don't tread into the more controversial topics of the nominees that could have been on this list. I want to pivot to the war over Warner Bros. between Netflix and the parent company of CBS News, Paramount Skydance, because I think it kind of speaks to the blurred lines of entertainment right now. What impact would a Warner Bros. takeover by either of these big companies mean for the entertainment industry as a whole? I think we'd see a huge impact both in film and TV. On the film side, I think a lot of it depends on who the winning bidder ultimately is. Netflix has said that they do want to do theatrical releases that continue with what Warner Bros. is doing, but that's not really part of their company currently. Whereas Paramount has said that they're in the film business, this is going to be part of the model. TV is also really interesting because Netflix is such a dominant streaming player, and then if they added Warner Bros. in, that would make them even bigger. It's just a question of where HBO would sit within that and whether it's kind of like a prestige category, like an FX with Disney. And for Paramount, that would be huge to their streaming ambitions to add a Warner Bros. Caitlin Houston, thank you so much. Thank you.
