In what follows, the Vatican has announced that the conclave to elect the next pope is scheduled to commence shortly, marking the beginning of the process of choosing Pope Francis' successor.

Catholic cardinals have agreed to start the conclave, a secretive voting process, delaying it briefly to allow time for discussion and building consensus amongst the attendees. The meeting will convene in the Sistine Chapel with 135 cardinals from around the world participating. This decision to delay the process seeks to facilitate better understanding and decision-making among the cardinals as they elect the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

Historically, previous conclaves, such as those in 2005 and 2013, have been concluded promptly, often within two days. The cardinals participating in the upcoming election have emphasized their desire to maintain Pope Francis' focus on supporting marginalized individuals and promoting peace over conflict, as a guiding principle in choosing his successor.

Monday's informal meeting to set the date follows the death of Pope Francis, whose funeral was held on Saturday. According to the Vatican, the date was agreed to give time for the cardinals to get to know each other and find a consensus on a candidate before they are sequestered in the Sistine Chapel. The closed-door meeting will start inside the chapel and will involve some 135 cardinals from across the world. Although there is no set time frame for choosing the next pope, the two conclaves that took place in 2005 and 2013 only lasted two days.
