A fatal explosion at the Bristol Health and Rehab Center in Bristol, Pennsylvania, on December 23 resulted in two deaths and left dozens injured. Survivors, including staff and residents, are recovering from both physical injuries and emotional trauma, with some still hospitalized.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion, with a preliminary report expected in the coming weeks. The facility's new owner, Saber Healthcare Group, has pledged to address prior issues, and it was reported that workers had responded to complaints about the smell of gas hours before the incident.

Huge piles of debris and rubble remain on the property of Bristol Health and Rehab Center. It's unbearable, yeah. Just to see what they went through that day and, you know, family members coming and crying for their family. It was devastating. Darlington Jenea was here Tuesday trying to get his wife's car towed home. He says she's a nurse at the facility and was on the second floor when the explosion happened. Jenea said she's been released from the hospital and is now recovering at home. It's very devastating. Every night she's having a PTSD. She still can't get over it. It's very, very traumatic. Tara Smothers was inside the building at the time of the blast. This is like a second home to me. More like first home because I'm here more than I'm at my home. So it's very sad. She says she's worked here for 38 years since she was 15 years old. Her cousin was a resident at the facility at the time of the explosion. I just heard a loud noise and I just saw smoke and darkness and then I just ran for my life and when I went out I first witnessed my cousin and the only reason I recognized him is from his hat he had on his head because his whole face was black, smoke all over. Marlo Middlebrook says she was getting ready to make her daily visit to see her brother here and she was planning on bringing her six-year-old granddaughter when she got word about the blast. We would have been in there. We would have been in that building and I think about my granddaughter. Middlebrook says her older brother was a resident at the facility. Her younger brother was here giving him a haircut and her son was working in the cafeteria at the time. The two brothers are still in the hospital. My son came home last night, thank God. He's on a walker. Saber Healthcare Group took over ownership of the facility on December 1st. In a statement last week it said we have worked to improve and fix prior issues and we will continue that work in the wake of this event. Last week a PICO spokesperson said workers had been out here in response to reports about the smell of gas hours before the explosion. That was Liz Crawford reporting.
