The incident occurred after her carry-on was placed in an overhead bin several rows away from her seat at the suggestion of a flight attendant. Upon landing, the woman discovered her bag was missing and a similar-looking backpack containing men's toiletries was found unclaimed on the plane. Despite filing reports with local authorities and Southwest Airlines, the jewelry has not been recovered. The airline stated that it does not track carry-on items, and thefts are handled by local authorities. The woman shared her experience to warn others about the risks of separating from valuable belongings while traveling.

New at 6 o'clock, ABC 10 News reporter Michael Chen reveals the one clue the thief may have left behind on the plane. On this table, a growing heap of documents and notes gathered by Stephanie Arruas after a wedding trip by air turned into a heist of her heirloom jewelry. My necklaces were here. A mostly empty jewelry box and a feeling of emptiness. Someone had taken a piece of me. For Arruas, since a mid-August flight to attend her niece's wedding in Hawaii. It was a special family event, and I wanted my heirloom jewelry with me. This is a selfie taken before the Southwest flight by Arruas, wearing an expandable black backpack. After getting on the plane, she snagged a first row seat. Recovering from an arm injury, Arruas asked a flight attendant to help her put it in the overhead bin. Arruas says the flight attendant claimed there was no room and motioned to some bins about seven rows away, prompting this from Arruas. It's a very valuable bag. I'd rather not be separated from my bag. And she says, it'll be fine. The backpack did end up in the bin some seven rows from her seat as she yelled out her concerns from the bins to the flight attendant at the front of the plane. Later, after her flight landed in Oakland for a connecting flight, she got up and looked at the bin. And I don't see my bag. And something inside me just fell in my stomach. Arruas raced off the plane, eyeing all the deplaning passengers. When the last person walks past you, what's going through your mind? I thought, there goes my bag. An airline employee searched the plane and found a similar looking backpack filled with men's toiletries. Arruas has been told that backpack has yet to be claimed more than a month later. I know I'm never going to see my jewelry again. Arruas says gone are some 10 pieces of jewelry, most family heirlooms. About 18 to 20 diamonds around that heart. Including a necklace from her deceased grandmother and a diamond pendant from her sister, who has also passed away. The total loss, nearly $40,000. She filed a report with Oakland authorities and two complaints with Southwest Airlines, which ended with this email informing her the lost item couldn't be located. Arruas hopes by sharing her story, others' valuables will remain safe. Don't separate, put it at your feet, put it directly above your head. I don't want this to happen to anyone else. Michael Chen, ABC 10 News. Arruas says that she also wishes she put a baggage tag on her backpack and placed an air tag inside. In a statement, Southwest Airlines says the airline doesn't track carry-on items, so any reported theft would be handled by local authorities.
