The situation has resulted in the Coalition's popularity reaching its lowest point in four decades, with concerns that further infighting could damage the alliance and Lee's leadership. The Liberals face a critical decision: follow the Nationals and risk losing credibility on climate action, or maintain their commitment to net zero and risk a split within the Coalition.

Happy Christmas, Prime Minister. A day after the Nationals gave a gift of their own to the Liberals, ditching net zero. They're entitled, as their own party, to arrive at their own position. The Prime Minister steering clear of the coalition chaos. Muscle Monday! Visiting a medical clinic as the health of the coalition's popularity becomes terminal, sinking to its lowest in 40 years. The coalition, I'll leave them to their chaos and infighting. Western Australian MP Rick Wilson is the latest Liberal to back Barnaby Joyce and his private members bill to scrap net zero. The only thing we're on track for is impoverishing our great country. Mr Joyce is still yet to decide if he'll return to the Nationals party room, even after declaring its position on climate change. I've got a lot more to ask. The coalition could play a really important role in holding the government to account. Instead, it is wasting its time with this infighting. Opposition leader Susan Lee faces two scenarios. Follow the Nats and dump net zero to keep the peace, or potentially face a second coalition divorce. Either way, this will be a true test of her leadership. We'll allow them the time and space to get to their position, I think. But we won't be distracted by the Hunger Games, which are playing out on that side of the house. But that might require a Christmas miracle. We can look forward to a Liberal Party energy position and then a coming together as a coalition. Will she bow to the pressure of the nutters in the National Party, or will she stand strong on climate action? Matthew Karstunen, 10 News. Time now to bring in our network political editor, Ashley Raper, who joins me now from Canberra. Ash, this is such a divisive issue for these two. So can Susan Lee keep the coalition together? That's certainly what she wants to do, Sandra. But for all the commentary about that, the opposition leader is a number of steps away from that point. First, she has to keep her party together as it finalises what it wants to do on net zero. An even bigger divide has emerged today between those from the right of her party who think the Liberals should follow the Nationals and abandon net zero, and then those who don't, who feel that doing that would obliterate any credibility the Liberals have on climate change. So really, Susan Lee is facing the choice of splitting her party room or abandoning net zero and copying the political ramifications that come from that. Throw in the coalition partnership and it is almost impossible to navigate and could be extremely damaging to her leadership, Sandra.
