Many Cincinnati residents are increasingly worried about crime in their neighborhoods, with many calling for city leaders to take stronger action as violent incidents continue to occur across the city.

Cincinnati residents have raised concerns about safety in their neighborhoods following a series of violent incidents, including a deadly home invasion and multiple shootings. While overall crime in the city has increased slightly compared to the previous year, certain neighborhoods, such as Clifton, have seen notable rises in robberies and aggravated assaults.

Longtime residents report increases in aggressive panhandling, drug use, and public disturbances. In response to these concerns, local authorities and media outlets are encouraging community engagement, including hosting listening sessions to gather further input from residents about crime and safety.

I just want to feel safe and and comfortable. That's been the constant refrain from many living in Cincinnati. Recently, I do believe in a lot of cases it is the younger the teenagers who are causing a lot of the problems because they're young, you know, they're young, they're energetic, and they have to express things some way and that's the problem. There is no way for them to do it other than through violent means. Several violent incidents sparked calls for city leaders to take action, including a deadly home invasion in over the Rhine. This just isn't about me. I am not the only widow. Patrick is not the only body that Sarah Harringer, her husband Patrick was stabbed to death in early June. Police said his killer cut off his electronic monitoring unit months earlier. In the last two weeks, OTRs had several shootings, including two murders over 24 hours. In downtown, a viral brawl occurred, leading to several arrests. Cincinnati police crime data shows overall crime up just half a percent compared to last year. However, crime is down 7 1⁄2% compared to 2023 in the 40 years. The four decades that I've been here, I've seen a dramatic increase in aggressive panhandling, open use of drugs, drug overdoses. Ben Pantoja is a longtime resident of Clifton, a neighborhood where I found a much different story, so that has increased quite a bit. Triggered by the violence, crime has increased quite a bit. Trends show year to date reported crimes are up slightly with robberies and aggravated assaults at their highest levels in years. Last month, portions of Clifton's Ludlow Ave were disrupted by late night Street takeover. Seeing that increase year over year like that, particularly for Clifton, this is just Clifton. What does that say to you about efforts to quote combat that? I think it law enforcement has gotten away from the theory of broken windows that the broken window theory that if you control things like graffiti litter when you do that more and more areas like Clifton that weren't having those highest higher level crimes start to get those higher level crimes as well.
