Indigenous Mapuche communities in Chile's Araucanía region are expressing concern over the possible election of far-right candidate Jose Antonio Kast. Many Mapuche fear that a Kast victory would lead to further militarization and a worsening of their rights, as the region has already been under a state of emergency for four years.

The Mapuche, who make up 10 percent of Chile's population and are among its poorest, have been reclaiming ancestral lands they say were seized by settlers. Despite only a small minority taking up arms, the conflict has led to increased police and military presence, a situation likely to continue regardless of the election outcome.

These fertile fields have been at the center of a decades-long conflict in south-central Chile, home to the indigenous Mapuche people. Legally, Segundo Antilao and his sister Rosalia own only three hectares of land. But like many Mapuche, they're reclaiming what they say is their ancestral land, seized by white settlers at the end of the 19th century. They've always denied us Mapuche our rights. And if Mr. Cast wins the election, we'll be even worse off than now. He's like Trump. He's referring to Jose Antonio Cast, the far-right-wing founder of Chile's Republican Party, who's the favorite to win Sunday's presidential election. What you see here is terrorism, not rural violence. It's terrorism. And that's what's going to change, because we're here to liberate the Arocania region. For four years, the region has been under a state of emergency. Soldiers and special forces police have been deployed to dissuade attacks by armed Mapuche groups on farms, forestry equipment, schools and even churches. Eighty-one-year-old René Urbán is a second-generation Chilean farmer, whose grandfather migrated here from Switzerland. He tells me he can't remember how many times he and his son have been attacked by groups wanting to drive them off their land. The latest incident, he says, left bullet holes throughout his vehicle, just missing him. The region is the conservative candidate's stronghold. And Mapuches like Rosalia Antilao are worried. We've never been violent, but according to Cast, he'll come here to crush the violence. They're already calling for a state of siege. Imagine, in every corner we'll have soldiers and police. We can't live like that. The Mapuche make up 10 percent of Chile's population, and they are the poorest segment of society. Only a very small percentage have taken up arms. But whoever wins the election will continue to militarize this region for the foreseeable future.
