Close to a hundred thousand people have celebrated St Patrick's Day in Chicago, with the city hosting parades and the famed Chicago River was dyed green.

The celebration included parades and various public events, highlighting the city’s rich cultural heritage and community spirit associated with this Irish holiday. A key feature of the celebrations was the dyeing of the Chicago River, a tradition that transformed the river into a vibrant green, serving as a focal point for the festivities and attracting both locals and tourists alike.



Chicago turns green for St. Patrick's Day

For more than 60 years, Chicago has celebrated St. Patrick's Day by dyeing the Chicago River this iconic shade of green. Using a vegetable dye that coincidentally starts off orange, the river is green for about a week. It's like a neon grassy green, but not too neon. No words to say how I'm feeling now, it's beautiful. Last year, an estimated 75,000 people from all over the world attended the city's annual St. Patrick's Day parade, making it the largest celebration of the holiday outside of Dublin. We continue to come back every year, so this is generation number three coming to Chicago St. Patrick's Day weekend. Outside of Chicago, Americans celebrate St. Patrick's Day by attending their local parades, wearing green, eating meals with cabbage, and drinking. St. Patrick's Day is the third most popular drinking day of the year, with the average celebrant drinking 4.2 alcoholic beverages, according to the National Retail Federation. Around the world, more than 13 million pints of Guinness are consumed. Celebrating the patron saint of Ireland who brought Christianity to the islands in the 7th century, the holiday honors centuries of Irish religious history and culture. For Irish immigrants in the 1600s all the way to the early 1900s, it was a way to quell homesickness as they settled in the U.S. And for Irish Americans today, it's a celebration of those roots.
