Chadian opposition politician and former prime minister Succès Masra has received a 20-year prison sentence and a 1 billion CFA franc fine. He was found guilty of disseminating hateful and xenophobic messages and being complicit in a massacre in Mandakawa, which reportedly arose from inter-community conflict. 

Massra's legal team has denounced the verdict, claiming the case was based on insufficient evidence and describing the outcome as a humiliation. Observers have also raised concerns about the political motivations behind the charges. In addition to Massra, 74 others were tried in connection with the Mandakawa massacre, with 64 also receiving 20-year sentences.

20 years in prison, and a 1 billion CFA franc fine. This is the hefty sentence Chadian opposition politician and former prime minister, Souksé Massra, was handed on Saturday. The politician is accused of having disseminated hateful and xenophobic messages, as well as being complicit of murder in relation to a massacre in Mandakawa in May that reportedly stemmed from an inter-community conflict. Following the verdict, Massra's lawyers denounced a humiliation for their client, and that the case was based on empty files. Observers had also denounced political motivations for their accusations in the lead-up to Massra's trial. Another 74 people also appeared in trials related to the Mandakawa massacre, in which they were accused of participating. 64 of them reportedly also received 20-year prison sentences.
