The Canyon Fire has burned more than 1,000 acres near Lake Piru, and forced evacuations in Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

A wildfire, referred to as the Canyon Fire, has rapidly expanded near Lake Piru, impacting areas in both Ventura and Los Angeles counties. The fire has prompted mandatory and warning evacuation orders, with firefighting crews from multiple agencies responding to the scene. Approximately 250 firefighters are currently on the ground, supported by a fleet of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft drawing water from the nearby lake to combat the blaze.

Authorities report that while several structures are threatened, there have been no confirmed reports of property damage. Weather conditions, including high temperatures and moderate winds, have contributed to the fire's spread, but a decrease in wind speeds is expected to aid firefighting efforts. Residents are urged to stay informed about evacuation orders and to leave early if directed by officials.

that's what we're going to talk about in just a moment. But first, let's take a look at this. Okay Wildfire exploding in size and forcing evacuations in both Ventura and L. A counties. The canyon fire rapidly spreading and burning towards the east. Good evening. Welcome to Fox 11 News at five on Fox 11 and Fox 11 Plus. I'm Alex Michaelson and I'm Christine Divine. Let's take a live look from Sky Fox of the Canyon. Fire started around 1 30. You see aerial plane right above us. It's going to be pretty wild. It's going to be pretty wild. It's going to be pretty wild Highway 1 26. The update here, though it has crossed into L. A county. Is burning east toward Santa Clarita at a rapid rate around 100 firefighting personnel from multiple agencies are responding. You can look at the streets there that we're watching here. A closer look at the evacuation orders and warnings, which have greatly expanded in the last hour. The yellow areas mean to get out of your house. Get out of your car. Get out of your car. Pick up the areas in red under mandatory evacuation right now, meaning it is an order. Leave now. Get out of your house. The yellow areas mean to prepare to evacuate. Start getting your stuff ready. We are joined now for more information with Fred Fielding, the public information officer from L. A county fire as we watch their firefight there from the air. Fred, thank you for joining us. We appreciate you joining us. Let's talk about the fire situation. What does it mean? It's spreading towards homes in Castaic, so we've got a lot of people on the ground. It's now 250 firefighters roughly on the ground, and we're building this up to meet the demand that this fires created. And that's exactly correct. You guys were talking about making sure that people stay apprised of all the evacuation orders. If they go to l. A county .gov slash emergency evacuation, we're going to make sure that people stay apprised of all the evacuation orders and warnings. Do we know of any buildings or structures that have burned so far? I don't at this point. There haven't been reports of that. I know there are structures that are threatened, but I don't have any reports as of yet on any structures that have been actually damaged. So we know that we are in a bit of a heatwave. That's not supposed to last too many more days. But how concerned are you about the fires? Well, you know, the fire always plays a big role in these wildfires when we just have three hot, dry days. That really makes the environment where these fires can happen and spread quickly. It really changes that and makes it much more likely that a fire could have large scale fire growth. Other winds of concern. The winds are moderate. Now it started at about five miles an hour. It's going to be a little bit more than that. We're going to have to wait and see. We're going to have to push them. Um. Hopefully they died down as the night comes, but we'll just have to watch and see because we don't see those dramatic winds that we saw in early January when we had the Palisades fire in the Eaton fire, we're able to look at aircraft like this up in the air. Remember those days we did not have aircraft up in the air. And so can you talk to us about how you're going to deal with those winds and how you're going to try to knock this thing down as much as possible before any structures burn. Yeah, they're an incredible asset. These helicopters are large helicopters carry up to 3000 gallons. We've got a lake nearby that allows us to have very short cycles and get a lot of water on these fires, and that really buys us time where the ground crews can come in and help us out. They're also an important intelligence asset because they allow us to get a bird's eye view of the fire that allows us to see what structures are threatened. Um what kind of access we have. It's really there. They're an incredible asset. And what kind and how many aircraft do you have right now? Battling this one? We have seven, uh, helotankers, and I believe there are four more that have been deployed. We have a helotanker. We have a helotanker and we have a fixed wing as well. We have 11 fixed wing aircraft that are working on it. Oh, wow. Those are Yeah. So a lot of air power is being diverted to this because you know the more we can do in the beginning of a fire. The more we can keep it from growing in size, you know, in its incipient phase as it's starting everything we do right now. And I mean, we just were looking at that picture. You brought up the fact that the lake is right there. I mean, you can't get a lot closer to a lake than than where it is right now. I mean, that's very fortunate for your guys out there. That's definitely that's fortunate for us because it allows us to do our job and fortunate for the residents because it means we can be that much more effective. So you talked about the evacuation orders and the concerns that the fire is moving toward homes. How much specific information can you give us? Looks like we're looking at a helicopter also using those as well. You know, I don't have a lot of specifics. Our public information officer Torres is headed up there right now. And Ventura County's public information officer doubt is I believe on scene. They're going to have a little bit more intel through the incident commanders. I've just sort of got I've got a sort of broad view of the fire and talk and talk about that. The fact that this is sort of right now on the border of Ventura in L. A County, how you work together sort of joint command aspect of this. Yeah, it's crucial that we train and we're able to integrate seamlessly. Thankfully we do a lot of training with Ventura. We we utilize the same radio channels. We like so we're able to communicate effectively and manage the fire effectively. Um, and all that training is crucial to be being able to limit these fires and their growth. So we had a wider shot there that showed an oil rig. You talked about the homes of concern here. I'm guessing we have no idea how this started. Probably at this point in time here, but watching this fire here. Obviously we have great concerns whenever there's a fire here, but this one doesn't seem to be threatening a lot of people or will it soon? You know, I'm not sure exactly what the where it's at in terms of the large scale populations. I know where it's at right now. It's more ranch style homes, so we're able to more effectively kind of use the resources to concentrate around those homes. Um, but again, it's going to take those people on the ground to talk to the I C's in order to say exactly when it's going to hit or threaten those structures and in large scales. So most important message to the residents right now, people that may be watching this in the area that you're trying to get out there. Yeah, stay informed about evacuation orders and warnings again. That's L. A county dot gov slash emergency and that has a link to the Ventura County site, which is emergency dot Ventura County dot gov and staying informed about those evacuation orders and warnings is crucial in order to be able to get out in a in an effective manner. On getting out early helps us to get in there and be able to work effectively. And which lake is that? We were looking at there and if it weren't for fires, it's a really pretty aerial picture there. You know, I'm sorry. I'm not sure which like that is. That's what I stay at. Okay, Piru. Sorry, Lake Piru. Sorry. Yeah, I know there's there's a couple spread throughout there. Um, but yeah. Let's bring you into the conversation because that is so important right now. Yeah, wind is a factor weather overall, as he said, a factor. We've got the warm conditions. We've got fairly low humidity, but it's not like it's a big little Santa Ana or major wind set up right now. Let me take you in a little bit closer, and that was Lake Piru. We were looking at so here's the canyon fire, and I've seen a cluster of weather stations in that area, measuring wind gusts anywhere from around 10 to 20 MPH in some spots, and then there's one that's up on a peak a little bit higher up. That's measuring gusts over 30 MPH right now, and they're all measuring the same wind direction, basically from west to east or from southwest to northeast, so blowing towards Interstate five away from Lake Piru, and we could see that kind of diagonal motion on the smoke right there. So the forecast wind gusts importantly here as we look at the next hour, six o'clock in this general area, 10 to 20 MPH gusts expected maybe a little over 20 times. But look what happens from 6 to 7 o'clock. You see a little bit of a decrease here, and as we go through the night into the morning, I think the winds are pretty much guaranteed to turn almost completely calm for a lot of the night and morning hours, so that should help them continue to battle this and maybe get it under a little more control. Now, as we go through the day tomorrow, we're going to find the winds pick right back up. Notice tomorrow afternoon winds from the same direction from the southwest blowing northeast and again in the same kind of general intensity range about 10 to 20 MPH gusts or maybe a little above 20 MPH as well. And also the humidity will naturally rise a little bit as we go through the nighttime. Aside from that, you know the heat is the big story today are day two of our three day heat wave, and this is the peak of it. We saw a lot of one hundreds in the far inland areas, i.e. right now we got 100 Santa Clarita's at 99 right now. Desert showing temperatures well into the 100s. It's 1 18 over towards Palm Springs, so we have another hot day still to come tomorrow. Heat advisories remain in effect. We cool slightly for the weekend. Lots to talk about in the forecast. We'll get to those details later. For now, let's go back to you.
