Members use social media and gaming platforms to lure, groom and extort victims, often young girls, to commit disturbing acts, goading them into branding themselves, maiming animals and even suicide, for clout and to cause chaos. This week, Canada became the first country to officially list the 764 as a terrorist entity under the criminal code. It does indicate that there is a sense of alertness that Canadian law enforcement have and concerns that they have. Ottawa also listed the Maniac Murder Cult, or MKY, a group associated with 764, and the Terrorgram Collective, known for spreading white supremacy ideology. Earlier this year, CBC's The Fifth Estate spoke to this Red Deer Alberta mom, whose daughter was caught up in the chilling web of 764 back in 2021, urged to hurt herself and kill her mother before ultimately getting help. If then they were convincing kids to do mass shooting, my kid would have done that. And that is terrifying to think. The move out of Ottawa this week gives police additional powers. They can now freeze or seize property, and helping these groups carries legal consequences. The designation is being championed by groups who closely monitor these networks. I hope that it would be a wake-up moment for some of them, seeing that there are such serious consequences and that nobody is truly anonymous online. A case involving a Halifax teen accused of being involved with 764 was before the court on Thursday.
