The English-speaking minorities in the northwest and southwest regions have long complained the predominantly French-speaking central government is ignoring their rights. The situation deteriorated in 2017 when armed separatists declared an independent state. They have called for a boycott on education to draw attention to what they say is the increased use of French in schools in anglophone parts of the country. The fighters have attacked a number of schools in recent years. Human Rights Watch says at least 6,000 people have been killed, including teachers and students. At times we see videos of other schools, how they are being attacked by separatist fighters in class and they somehow injure them, so it makes us to be scared. And also the teachers are also scared. Rights groups say the conflict and closure of schools has devastated education in the English-speaking regions. The examination board doesn't take into consideration the lockdown. They set the same exams for students of the English-speaking part and students of the French-speaking part. For decades, rights organizations have accused him of corruption and undermining Cameroon's democratic progress.
