Rolling Stone senior writer Angie Matrosio joins us now to talk about his legacy. Angie, how can one even begin to canonize Mr. Weir's impact on music? Uh, that's a really big question. I mean, this is a huge counterculture icon who lasted decades passing on the flame of the Grateful Dead's music and catalog and more than the music itself. This was an entire vibe and movement that carried on for so many years, and it's a really devastating loss. Yeah, really? Well, and we understand you interviewed him. Just last year he was still knee deep in multiple projects. Did he explain his stamina? I mean, he literally kept on trucking for a lot of years. Yeah, this is someone who I was chasing down for years to interview. My dream interview. I wanted it for so long and like I said, he's been virtually on the road since 1965. This man did not take breaks and besides even on the stage he was working on a memoir he was doing. Symphony projects he was getting into. You know, running barefoot and different kinds of exercising. He didn't really have any kind of. He was really bad at sitting down. I would say and and he was just very humble about all of it. Yeah, and what strikes you? I mean, you say you chase that interview for years. What's something that people watching may not know about him or just what it was like to be in his presence as somebody who really earned that time with him? I think he talked about the 60s as if they happened last week. He was sharp as a tack at 77 years old at the time that we spoke and it was really like talking to somebody who was there who could tell you what it was like who didn't romanticize that time at all. He was very realistic about it. He had seen a lot and he had been through so much but at the end of the day, what mattered to him most was just playing on stage and being with his family.
