Carlo Ancelotti, the current coach of Brazil's national football team, has been sentenced by a Spanish court to one year in prison for tax fraud committed during his first term as Real Madrid manager in 2014. In addition to the prison sentence, Ancelotti was fined more than $450,000 for hiding income in shell companies during 2014 and 2015.

While Spanish prosecutors initially sought a longer sentence, the court's decision allows for the possibility of a suspended sentence since Ancelotti is a first-time offender and the term is under two years. The Brazilian Football Confederation has not issued a public statement regarding the ruling.

Ancelotti's legal team welcomed the decision because in Spain a judge can suspend a sentence of less than two years for first time offenders. The court also agreed that Ancelotti was not formally a Spanish resident in 2015. While Ancelotti is likely to pay a hefty fine, it is unclear whether he will actually serve time in jail. His tax fraud sentence is however not the only one in the world of top football clubs. The 66-year-old Italian who works here at the Brazilian Soccer Confederation headquarters is one more soccer star involved in tax evasion cases. That includes also superstars Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and coach José Mourinho. Ancelotti left Real Madrid after second stint at the club and joined Brazil's national team as trainer in May this year. Brazil's football confederation has not publicly commented on the court's ruling.
