A bomb exploded outside the home of one of Italy's top investigative journalists late on Thursday, damaging two cars belonging to his family and prompting messages of solidarity for the reporter from colleagues and politicians.

A bomb detonated outside the residence of Italian investigative journalist Sigfrido Ronucci, destroying his car and damaging his daughter's vehicle. Ronucci, who has been under police protection since 2021 due to previous threats, was inside his home at the time and was unharmed.

Authorities report the device contained about one kilogram of explosives and are treating the incident as a significant act of intimidation. Italy's anti-mafia police have launched an investigation, and Prime Minister Giorgia Maloney has condemned the attack, affirming the importance of press freedom. The incident coincided with the anniversary of the car bombing that killed Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

This is the site where Sigfrido Ronucci's car exploded. The force of the bomb was enough to kill, but the Italian journalist has not been silenced. He says it's not the first time he's been targeted while hosting the investigative series report. It's an escalation. Last year we found P38 bullets right behind a bush in front of my house, two or three metres away, and no fingerprints were found. They were discovered during an episode of our show we did on mafia massacres. The explosion occurred around 10.20pm on Thursday night. Ronucci, who has been under police protection since 2021 due to previous threats, had arrived to his home in Campo Escalano 20 minutes earlier and was safely inside. His car was destroyed and his daughter's was damaged. Afterwards he told state TV that the bomb squad had initially said it was likely a rudimentary device with approximately one kilo of explosives. Italy's anti-mafia police have opened an investigation into the incident, and Prime Minister Giorgia Maloney strongly condemned it as what she called a serious act of intimidation. The freedom and independence of information are non-negotiable values of our democracies, which we will continue to defend. Coincidentally or not, the attack occurred on the eighth anniversary of the car bombing that killed Maltese investigative journalist Daphne Karawana-Galizia.

The Trump administration is awaiting word from the Supreme Court after asking it to allow the immediate deployment of National Guard troops to Illinois to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. A lower court blocked the move.
