Benin's military was Monday searching for fugitive soldiers behind a foiled coup attempt on the weekend that left several dead as other west African countries mobilized to offer military support.

Benin's government is actively searching for soldiers involved in a failed coup attempt that took place on a Sunday. The attempt included attacks on the homes of senior officials, resulting in the fatal wounding of General Bertin Bada's wife, and a brief takeover of the national television station before loyal forces intervened.

Several arrests have been made, but the leader of the coup remains at large. Calm has since returned to Benin, with public demonstrations in support of President Patrice Talon, whose second term is set to end next year ahead of elections scheduled for April 2026.

Days after an attempted military coup, Benin's President Patrice Talon held a moment's silence in honour of those killed in the fighting. The number of victims remains unclear. In a press conference on Monday, his government spokesperson unveiled details of Sunday's foiled coup attempt. At around 2am, they first went to the home of the Director of the Military Cabinet of the President of the Republic, General Bertin Bada, who managed to escape, but whose wife they fatally wounded. At around 5am, they made their way to the residence of the head of state, where the Republican Guard, alerted and under orders from their superiors, was waiting for them. The mutineers then headed for the national television station, where they made a short statement before being dislodged by the loyal army. A number of arrests were made, but the whereabouts of the coup leader remain unknown. As calm returned to the streets of Benin, protesters gathered to voice their support for the President. Benin is known for its democratic example, known for its stability, and given the level of development of the country today, we almost turned to darkness. President Patrice Talon will be coming to the end of his second term next year. Elections are expected to take place in April 2026.
