Bangladesh's Chief Election Commissioner has announced that the country's next parliamentary election will be held on February 12, with the deadline for submitting nominations set for December 29. The announcement comes amid public anticipation and follows the banning of the Awami League, led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, from participating due to its role in recent protests.

Other major parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Jamaat-e-Islami, and the newly formed Bangladesh Citizens Party, have welcomed the election. This vote will allow citizens to exercise their democratic rights, participate in a referendum on a caretaker government, and vote on constitutional amendments and the July Charter, which proposes significant reforms.

We are in front of the Bangladesh National Parliament. A lot of people gather here for socializing every evening. Now the Chief Election Commissioner has announced the date for the next parliamentary election to be held on the 12th February next year. The last date for submitting nomination is 29 December. This is a much anticipated announcement. People were eager to know whether the election will at all happen or not and when is the date going to be declared. Well that's saying now people are excited. We spoke to some of the people here. They're excited about it. Although there's some controversy. The one of the main political party, the Bangladesh Awami League, which was led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted by the student protest last year, they're not going to be able to participate. Their activities are banned. Many people are questioning whether there is any logic to that as one of the major political party, they should have been allowed to participate in the election considering some of the people who were blamed for a lot of the atrocities committed during the protest, maybe they should have been barred but the party should have been allowed to participate in the election with the right people. Otherwise, most people have accepted it. The major party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, the main religious party, Jamaat-e-Islami and the newly formed student party, Bangladesh Citizens Party, have welcomed this considering since 2014 most of the parliamentary election held under Sheikh Hasina's government was by and large rebugged by the population. It's either rigged or the voting was done at midnight and the 2024 election was mostly boycotted by the population. So this would be the first election where people would actually be able to put their democratic right in practice and select the choice of their people as well as participate in the referendum where they can vote for a caretaker government and also amendment to the constitution and also to implement the July Charter, a charter that has a lot of provision for reform under the next parliament.
