An emergency control zone has been expanded after a bio-security failure in northern NSW. A new infestation of fire ants has been detected only a few kilometres away from the Queensland border.

A nest of fire ants, considered one of the world's most invasive and dangerous pests, was recently found and destroyed at a school in Tweed Heads, New South Wales. Authorities have initiated genetic testing to determine the origin of the ants and expanded biosecurity zones by an additional 5,000 hectares to help contain the spread.

Border patrols have checked hundreds of vehicles crossing into New South Wales, turning back several and issuing fines for breaches of fire ant emergency orders. Officials emphasize the need for community vigilance and reporting, as eradication efforts will now continue through winter in key hotspots. The fight against fire ants is ongoing, with authorities warning of significant economic and health risks if the pest is not contained.

Small, but deadly. One of the world's most invasive pests have spread to tweed heads. We know that fire ants can be lethal to humans. They cause anaphylactic reactions. We know if they spread out of control they'll cause over $2 billion per year in economic damage to our country. An immature nest was found at a school earlier this week. It's since been destroyed and genetic testing is now underway to figure out where the fire ants came from. The real issue that I see is that there's this constant escape out of the zone in southeast Queensland. Biosecurity zones have been expanded including an additional 5,000 hectares to restrict the movement of high risk materials. But there's concerns not enough is being done to stop the spread. It's been out of control since the beginning. They've got long lateral tunnels and by the time somebody's poking around where they think the nest is, the ants have long gone. A Border Patrol operation checked nearly 700 cars crossing into New South Wales. 24 people were turned around and sent back to Queensland. 11 were fined for breaching the fire ant emergency order. We are quite open about the fact that we won't win this fight without the community's support. We would encourage anyone who thinks that they may have identified a fire ant to report through the fire ant reporting line. It can crawl, it can fly, it can raft. It's quite a tough little ant so it's something that we continue to fight. And for the first time, eradication efforts will persist through winter in hotspots like Queensland's Somerset, Scenic Rim and Lockyer Valley. Do I have confidence? At this stage, yes.
