It doesn't seem like a lot, but to a lot of people that makes a big difference. Plus medal incentives, up to $20,000 for gold, lesser amounts for other medals or a top four world title finish. Four and a half thousand Australians have made the Olympics, 70% get just one shot at it. We know that Olympians don't do it for the money, but there is a huge financial sacrifice involved. The money comes from a windfall dating back to the Sydney Olympics, $20 million will be put into a future fund. If it returns 6% a year, that'll be enough to pay retirement grants for decades into the future. A standout new development, a $10,000 payment for any female Olympian re-entering elite sport after a baby, another 10 grand if there's a second child. Motherhood and high performance careers can co-exist and we want to be able to further support that. Being a mum made me a better athlete and being an athlete made me a better mum.
