A man has been arrested for a series of break-ins and the theft of a truck in Austral, NSW. He was confronted by workers during the heist, injuring one as he escaped.

A man suspected of breaking into local businesses in Austral, NSW, was pursued by two residents before a confrontation occurred at a Mitre 10 store. During the altercation, the suspect allegedly armed himself with a hacksaw and later a knife, before fleeing in a stolen Mitre 10 truck, injuring a worker as he escaped. Police tracked the truck using its GPS and pursued it through several suburbs until it was stopped in Penrith, where a 51-year-old man was arrested. Authorities are investigating whether the suspect is connected to other break-ins in the area, and three Mitre 10 employees have been treated for injuries sustained during the incident.

This man in blue is being followed by two Austral locals. It's believed they suspect he's been breaking in to local businesses. It's very concerning, 8.30 in the morning, so it's very unusual. A scuffle in the car park spills into the Mitre 10 store. The suspect allegedly grabs a hacksaw, one of the locals is hit, and that man grabs a knife. The alleged thief finds the back door and makes his getaway in a stolen Mitre 10 truck, hitting one worker on the way out. I saw a truck spinning and it didn't stop and it cut the road to a couple of cars arriving from 15th Avenue. What this thief apparently didn't realise is that Mitre 10 trucks are fitted with a GPS tracker, making it that much easier for police to follow along. They caught up to the truck in Ludnum and pursued it as it weaved through the suburb and onto the M4. At Penrith, the truck U-turned and that's when Sydney traffic finally forced it to a standstill. A 51-year-old was arrested by the roadside, he's being spoken to by police. Part of the investigation includes looking at allegations the same man was involved in other break and enters in the area. Very bad, very bad news and when you see something like that very close to you it's very concerning about the security of a site day and night.
