Atlantic City is facing significant flooding as a result of a storm combined with high lunar tides and a persistent northeast wind. Officials report moderate to major flooding along the Jersey Shore, with debris washing up on roads and beaches. Residents and visitors are being advised to stay indoors, avoid travel, and heed barricades and warnings from emergency services.

The city has opened an evacuation center at the Atlantic City Convention Center for those needing higher ground, including the homeless population. Emergency management teams are actively communicating updates and coordinating efforts to ensure public safety. Authorities plan to assess beach erosion and storm damage once conditions improve.

Well, people down at the shore have been dealing with a lot of flooding since Sunday as we bring back closer to home and AccuWeather's Bill Waddell is in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Yeah, with the storm, we'll push even more low water later today. Bill, that storm, the combination of the high lunar tides and the tidal surge, moderate to major flooding along the Jersey Shore, including Atlantic City today. Yeah, absolutely. Good morning, guys. Yeah, that is a big concern with the high tide coming in a little after one o'clock this afternoon and that persistent flow from the northeast pushing all of that water. You can see here at the boardwalk, not many people out this morning. The few people we have seen out in ponchos, most people staying indoors and that's a good thing. Officials have been telling people if you can stay indoors, definitely stay off the roads and stay away from the beaches because we've been seeing some things being washed up with the debris. We actually have Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small joining us this morning. Thank you for being out here with us. We appreciate it. What is your message to local residents and especially visitors here in the area? Maybe they were trying to take a long weekend and now they're dealing with a storm. What message do you have for them to stay safe? Yes, and thank you to the AccuWeather audience for having me and in spite of the weather, it's a great day here in the city of Atlantic City. We're encouraging people to, you know, stay safe, stay indoors if possible. We're not out of this yet. We have a high tide event a little after one o'clock and we're expecting that to be a larger number. The first two numbers have underperformed both in the oceans and the back bay, which we're thankful for. The wind should subside sometime this afternoon. The rain has been persistent. That's going to be a factor throughout the day. Again, I want to give kudos to my staff, our emergency management team, you know, under acting emergency manager, you know, Mike Fermilero, has done a great job. Our director of public safety, Sean Riggan, who's been a running point over the situation. Our police, our fire, our fine public works team, our department of health and human services, who is manning the evacuation center at the Atlantic City Convention Center, where that's open for residents who need to get to higher ground and the homeless population. They're being fed three meals a day. So it's been a whole operation. As I told everyone, we specialize in things like this. We used to know Easter's hurricanes, blizzards and more, and I'm just proud that we have a very good team to execute. Always say you can have all the plans in the world, but if you don't have the great professionals to execute the plan, it's no good. So I'm very proud of the way we handle the storm, the way that we communicate with our residents like never before through our social media, through AC alerts, our Everbridge system. We're keeping the residents, you know, up minute by minute. We appreciate it, Mayor. Thank you so much. And again, people here clearly listening to the warnings, taking heed of the advice. We have not seen many cars out on the roads, and that's a good thing. We know that before the sun came up earlier this morning with the last high tide, you could see the debris left over on the roads, and officials just telling people please pay attention to those barricades. Do not drive around them. They want everyone to be safe and prepared, especially as we deal with that high tide coming in a little after one o'clock this afternoon. And then once the storm clears, the next question, not just here along the Jersey Shore, but all up and down this part of the East Coast, there's going to be some surveys going on checking out the beach erosion just to see how much impact there has been from this storm.
