Two people died and 18 people were injured in Kenya after a stampede broke out during the state funeral of Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The incident comes a day after three people were killed at a separate ceremony.

A stampede occurred during the state funeral of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga at Nyayo Stadium, resulting in at least two deaths and several people being rushed to hospital. The event drew thousands of mourners, including current President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who gathered to pay tribute to Odinga's significant role in Kenya's political history. 

Odinga, who died at age 80, was recognized for his contributions to Kenya's return to multi-party democracy and the 2010 constitution. His body lay in state in Parliament, an honor typically reserved for presidents, before further ceremonies were planned in Kisumu and Bondo.

Among the attendees, current President and political rival William Ruto, as well as former President Uhuru Kenyatta. Every once in a generation, there comes a leader whose impact transcends their moment, whose courage inspires change. My brother, Raila Amolo Odinga, was one such leader. Raila Odinga served as Prime Minister of Kenya from 2008 to 2013, but never succeeded in winning the presidency, despite five attempts. He outlasted many rivals and is credited as a major player in returning Kenya to multi-party democracy in the 1990s and overseeing the widely praised constitution of 2010. Kenya has lost a leader, a leader without whom the history of democracy in our nation could not be written. In a testament to his impact and influence on Kenyan politics, Odinga's body laid in state in Parliament on Friday morning ahead of the funeral, an honour only reserved for the president and former presidents. The two presidents will on Saturday have one more opportunity to say goodbye, this time in the city of Kisumu, before his burial in Bondo on Sunday.

The Trump administration is awaiting word from the Supreme Court after asking it to allow the immediate deployment of National Guard troops to Illinois to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. A lower court blocked the move.
