Dozens of people remain missing after heavy flash flooding and a mudslide devastated a village in northern India, killing at least four people, local officials said.

Families are pouring in here in search of their missing relatives. My brother was inside the hotel. People are saying that he got buried 50 feet below the debris and is no more. I have hope that he might be there in some hospital alive. For five days I have been coming here to know the whereabouts of my mother and sister. Authorities just ask us to wait. At the height of tourist season, heavy torrential rains triggered flash floods that swallowed an entire village of 500 people within minutes. Officials confirmed four deaths, but locals fear many more. Those rescued have been admitted to a local hospital, many with injuries from falling debris. Sohan Singh, who worked at a hotel there that is now buried in mud, saw it happen. The hotels behind me completely collapsed and after that, some boys came running from there, whistling and shouting for everyone to run. There was thick fog behind us, we couldn't see anything and we had no idea what to do or where to run. According to me, more than 50 to 60 people died. Environmentalists say in recent years, the Himalayan ecosystem faces extreme weather due to climate change and unchecked development. The high Himalayan region is extremely fragile because of tremendous efforts of the central and state governments to push infrastructure projects, things like dams, a major highway and then along with that comes a lot of commercial tourist traffic. By not updating the death toll and the number of missing people, critics accuse the government of hiding the true scale of what they call a man-made disaster.
