Dr. Liz Allen, a former ANU Council member, gave emotional testimony describing alleged interactions with Bishop, including claims of differential treatment, accusations of leaking confidential information, and distressing private meetings.

Dr. Allen stated that these experiences left her feeling threatened, fearful for her job, and emotionally distressed, leading to significant personal consequences. Julie Bishop was not present at the hearing but released a statement rejecting the allegations and affirming her commitment to respectful conduct. Bishop noted that grievance proceedings have been initiated and declined further comment.

Dr. Liz Allen, a former member of the Australian National University's Council, appeared before a committee hearing investigating the way universities are being governed, giving emotional testimony detailing some of her alleged interactions with Bishop. I believe Chancellor Bishop is hostile and arrogant to staff. The previous Vice-Chancellor Brian Schmidt kept the Chancellor's behaviour in check. When the current Vice-Chancellor began, my union affiliation became a source of differential treatment. Dr. Allen alleged the Bishop made accusations of improper and illegal conduct towards her relating to the leaking of confidential matters and spoke in detail about one meeting among several interactions. Chancellor Bishop later got me in a private room with another elected member. The Chancellor further berated me, suggested commencing a legal investigation and calling a journalist to confirm I wasn't leaking. I felt threatened and became extremely fearful. I believe my job was at risk. I became further distressed with the continued pursuit of false leaking allegations. Chancellor Bishop laughed incredulously at my emotional response and at one point blocked me leaving the room. Dr. Allen says she was so distressed by this she couldn't breathe and struggled walking and that she became suicidal on her drive home. The ANU staff member said she miscarried a child in the fortnight after the meeting. Julie Bishop was not present at the hearing today and has released a statement saying she rejects any suggestion that she engaged with council members, staff, students and observers in any other way than with respect, courtesy and civility. Going on to say that Dr. Allen has initiated grievance proceedings and it is not appropriate for her to comment further at this time.
