The annual Columbus Day parade in Chicago was organized by the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans and featured close to 200 floats and performers. The parade route traveled along State Street, concluding at Van Buren, and was preceded by a mass at the shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii. 

JCCIA President Ron Onesti emphasized that Columbus Day remains a federal holiday, referencing a recent presidential proclamation. Onesti also expressed a desire for inclusivity, welcoming Indigenous Peoples' Day celebrations and encouraging unity. The parade, a tradition since 1952, began with a short speaking program before the floats proceeded.

Despite controversy over the day's origins, we just spoke with JCCIA President Ron Onesti moments ago, who shared his thoughts. Yes, absolutely. Columbus Day is a federal holiday. It's never gone away. It's always been here. What the president just did with his proclamation is merely underscored the fact that Columbus Day is still a federal holiday, Indigenous People's Day. We have three holidays with them already. We welcome them. We love them. We want them to march with us. We want to march with them. We want to celebrate their day. Today is our day. This parade has been taking place since 1952. Right now, there's a short speaking portion before those floats set sail here on State Street.
