And for her family, she could have been spared if the state provided equal protection to its population across the whole territory. We knew we were going to be attacked. It was on the news. The whole area is unprotected. There are no houses that can offer even a minimum of protection, not just for our family but the whole region. She's one of the roughly 300,000 Bedouins, descendants of Muslim Arab shepherds living in the country. About half of them live in villages that are not officially recognised by the government. They can't build permanent homes. They live in small hovels, under constant threat of demolition. They don't get basic services, and lack rocket sirens, bomb shelters and cover from Israel's Iron Dome missile defence system. We need protection for all these villages. We need to act with the government to prevent any more victims. In the meantime, when shots are fired from the west, it's the Bedouins who are hit. From the east, it's the same, we're the victims and nobody considers us. This isn't the first time the Bedouin community suffers the consequences of war. Seven of them were killed by missiles fired from the Gaza Strip during the Hamas attack of October 7th.
