Dramatic footage has captured the moment an out-of-control car smashed into another vehicle before hitting a house and narrowly missing a sleeping family. Angry witnesses weren't about to let the alleged drunk driver get away, quickly making a citizen's arrest.

A car driven by a 27-year-old man allegedly under the influence of alcohol crashed into a family car and pushed it into a home in Cranbourne West. CCTV footage captured the impact, which caused extensive damage but did not result in injuries to the home's occupants, who were sleeping nearby.

Neighbours quickly intervened, detaining the driver until police arrived. The man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and authorities have not yet laid charges. The family estimates the cost of repairs to be in the thousands of dollars.

Alleged drunk driver crashes car into home

An out-of-control car with an allegedly drunk driver behind the wheel slammed into a family car and pushed that vehicle into the Cranbourne West home. CCTV captured debris from the brick wall being sprayed through the air. Inside the home, three adults, sleeping just metres from the point of impact. We sort of woke up to a big, like, explosion-type sound. Opened the front door and there was just a plume of dust and smoke. Action for the driver quickly turned to anger. Went up to the car, asked if he was alright and then when he started talking you could clearly hear that he was drunk. Yeah, he got out the car and then walked over to the trailer and cracked a can and had another drink. His attempts to flee were quickly thwarted. Gerry and his son, Dylan, along with his neighbours jumped into action and made a citizen's arrest. Our neighbour tackled him to the ground and about four or five of us pinned him, held him till the cops come. Dylan, when we had him down on the ground and were waiting for the police, he wouldn't let go of it. He was still drinking. Blood coming out of his mouth, pinned to the floor but he still wanted a drink. Despite the man's best efforts to escape, the neighbours managed to restrain him until police arrived. He was trying to get up, saying that he wouldn't run, he wouldn't run anymore. But, yeah, they're like, you ran once, we're not letting you go. Awesome bunch of neighbours, good crew, we all stick together. The 27-year-old driver was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The family says it's lucky no-one was hurt, but the damage to the home will cost thousands of dollars to repair. You're driving a weapon, so it's scary to think that people abuse it and use drugs or alcohol and get behind the wheel. Don't be a dickhead. Don't drive drunk. Simple as that.
