A New Mexico judge has dismissed the involuntary manslaughter charges against actor Alec Baldwin. The decision came after Baldwin's lawyers claimed that police had concealed evidence regarding the live ammunition that killed Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in 2021. Baldwin, visibly emotional, did not respond to questions after leaving the court.

The incident on the set of Rust occurred in 2021 when a live round was discharged from a firearm held by Baldwin, resulting in Hutchins' death. Subsequent investigations and lawsuits ensued, with the film's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, receiving an 18-month sentence for involuntary manslaughter. She was expected to testify at Baldwin's trial.

Baldwin's legal team argued that the sheriff's office had failed to disclose all the live rounds to the defense. This claim prompted the judge to take a recess before ultimately dismissing the case. The decision marks the end of Baldwin's criminal charges, although he remains liable for a multi-million dollar settlement with Hutchins' family.

A raft of investigations and lawsuits followed. The movie's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, sentenced to 18 months in April for involuntary manslaughter and was expected to testify in Baldwin's trial. But the actor's lawyers alleged the sheriff's office buried evidence. Live rounds, they say, were not disclosed to the defense. We asked to see every single round that could be related to the Rust set and this was hidden from us. You do know that? This was not hidden. This was not hidden? This is unusual. So unusual, the judge ordered a recess and sent the jury home. Thank you for coming in. I'm going to recess you for the day. I'm sorry. Late Friday, she ordered the case dismissed. This was really, it was like watching the Titanic go down. Sadly, the special prosecution case unraveled. The prosecution disappointed. I believe that the importance of the evidence was misconstrued. The dismissal means Baldwin has escaped the criminal charge but he'll be paying for that day for years to come through a multi-million dollar settlement with the family of Helena Hutchins.
