AI videos: Can you spot the difference between what's real and fake?

Our world is inundated with millions of videos, and with the rapid rise of A.I., many are fake, like a baby saved by a dog, a made-up senior center with A.I.-generated residents, and the homeless man prank sending police across the country on an A.I. goose chase. Unlike a good movie, there is no ending to our feeds as we scroll to infinity. At what point are we scrolling through our entire feed and we just think it's all real videos? Sometimes I think we've already crossed that line. The capability of generating realistic images and videos is dramatically better than it was even six months ago. Wow. John Licato is an associate professor at the USF Bellini College of A.I., Cybersecurity and Computing. He tells me the technology is so lifelike and evolving so fast, it's unstoppable. The A.I. now learning to fix common tells that a video is fake. The state-of-the-art A.I. generates images and videos. It then learns that, oh, I need to focus more on the fingers, or I need to focus more on the background details. And then the next generation can do that better. Does a human have to tell the A.I. to get better? We don't have to tell it what to do to perform that job better in the future. Everything you see and hear in OpenAI's Sora 2 trailer is A.I.-generated. Every video comes with sound. The technology is incredible, but people can manipulate it however they want. The deep state is going down. To American heroes like Martin Luther King Jr. and JFK, both resurrected in A.I. deep fakes. We're clear. And then there are the racially charged so-called digital blackface videos hitting our feeds during the government shutdown, spreading racist videos of black women stealing when funding for Snap stopped. We show that, you know, we're not, we're not rocket scientists, actually, we're journalists and we're using, you know, kind of basic detective skills. We sat down with Katie Sanders, editor-in-chief of PolitiFact, based at the Poynter Institute, to learn how to spot a fake. What do you do to not get fooled? Skeptical of everything. I'm no fun, but I think you can still be fun and not be fooled. So one thing that I think is really easy to do when you see something online is just look for where it started. Look at who is sharing it. See if it's been on the Internet before. When you're seeing a video that is evoking an emotional response, you need to look at each corner of the video, you know, and see is this human depiction realistic? Are they breathing? Are they changing the intonation of their speech? Are they using hands, you know, in kind of a natural way like I'm doing? Are they blinking? Blinking is a big one. I totally understand why people want to throw their hands up and say, like, it's too overwhelming. I'm just going to either, like, believe everything is real or nothing is real. Does walking away from a problem impact our democratic society and how people really feel about a politician one way or the other if we are throwing up our hands? I mean, is there a danger there? You raise a really smart question. If more people who could do something about a problem walk away, it leaves plenty of room for bad actors and for bad information to spread. So we need people who want to be civic-minded, who want to see more education and solutions around this era of online manipulation. Google has a reverse image search. Does Google have, like, a reverse video search that they can use to... I haven't seen one yet. That might be good, right? It could be useful. You're an AI guy. Does this freak you out a little bit, like... No. Mostly because it's... I mean, it's not surprising to me, right? We know that the idea that people would use technology for all kinds of, you know, noble and less noble purposes. How do you put the guardrails on the technology, whether through legislation or best practice or education or whatever, how do you put the guardrails so that it constrains some of the obviously malicious use cases, but doesn't restrict the technology from being able to do the good that it can possibly do?
