Additional possibilities arise with figures such as Brazil’s Cardinal da Rocha and the Philippines' Luis Antonio Tagli. The extensive list of candidates and the unpredictable nature of the conclave make it difficult to determine who will ascend to the papacy. Many cardinals were appointed by Pope Francis, representing diverse and sometimes remote church communities, adding complexity to the process. On the more conservative side, Robert Serrat from Guinea and the German Archbishop Gerhard Müller are also among the frontrunners. The Pope could also, like Cardinal da Rocha, come from Brazil or from the Philippines like Luis Antonio Tagli. But the list of names is long and conclaves are famously difficult to predict. There are many new cardinals who have been appointed by Pope Francis, some representing churches in quite remote territories. A new chemistry is taking form. But let's not forget that this is a time for prayer, contemplation and discernment, and one that is ultimately beyond purely political considerations. The conclave to elect the new Pope is expected to start between May 5th and May 10th.
