This decision follows a period where various regional groups, such as those backing the Nairobi process and southern African deployments, had separate and sometimes overlapping approaches to resolving the conflict.

The unified initiative is intended to create a coherent strategy to address the ongoing violence in eastern DRC, where the M23 rebel group remains active. Despite a recent U.S.-mediated peace deal between DRC and Rwanda, criticism persists due to the lack of explicit calls for the withdrawal of Rwandan forces, and violence continues in the region.

African Union takes over all peace initiatives on eastern DR Congo

African leaders meeting in the Kenyan capital have resolved to merge all efforts aimed at achieving peace in the eastern DRC into one initiative led by the African Union. Until Friday's resolution, different regional blocs had parallel, sometimes overlapping initiatives and approaches to ending the conflict in Congo's east. East African countries backed the so-called Nairobi process, while southern Africa had deployed forces to Congo. Today marks a turning point that there is now one African-led process that brings on board all the other initiatives, Nairobi, Luanda and any other initiative, into one coherent process on the situation in eastern DRC. Efforts to end the fighting in eastern Congo have intensified since Rwanda-backed M23 rebels seized two provincial capitals earlier this year. In July, DRC and Rwanda signed a U.S.-mediated peace deal, but the agreement has been criticized for not explicitly calling for the withdrawal of Rwandan forces from Congolese territory. It is both important and urgent to broker a comprehensive and inclusive permanent ceasefire that involves all relevant parties. Such a step is essential for the delivery of the much-needed humanitarian assistance and to lay a firm foundation for lasting peace for the people of the eastern DRC. Despite the July accord, violence still goes on in the region. M23 is the most prominent rebel group operating in Congo's east.
