Prospective clients should request to see licenses, certificates of insurance, workers' compensation, general liability, and auto policies. Legitimate contractors will readily provide this documentation. Early preparation is emphasized as it is more effective than trying to secure help during or after a crisis.

Picking a general contractor can be a stressful decision. Once they call us, now the clock starts ticking, but I've had clients on my rapid response list for 20 years that have never had a claim. Here's a checklist of what you should look out for when hiring a general contractor. You need to see their license, you need to see their certificates of insurance, their workers' comp, and their general liability policies, and their auto policies. Others request it all. A legitimate contractor has no problem providing that information to anyone. It's always best to prepare when there's not a problem. It's hard to prepare when you're in the middle of a problem.
