Thirty years after the end of the Bosnian war and the signing of the Dayton Accords, thousands of people like Musija remain internally displaced within Bosnia and Herzegovina. Many, especially those whose hometowns are now in areas controlled by other ethnic groups, have been unable to return and continue to live in temporary accommodations originally meant for short-term use.

While the right to return is guaranteed by both the Dayton Accords and Bosnia's constitution, ongoing ethnic and political divisions have made it difficult for many to go back to their original homes. For some, moving to modern buildings is the only viable option, but for others, the hope of returning home has faded into memory.

Like shells under a hammer, Musija's life was shattered by Bosnia's war. 30 years ago, she fled her home near Srebrenica. Ever since, she's been a refugee in her own country, selling walnuts in the market for change. But as a Bosniak, returning to a hometown that's now in Bosnia's Republika Srpska seems out of the question. It hits me hard because I lost two brothers there, two uncles on my mother's side and two uncles on my father's side. In my heart, it would be beautiful to return to that place, to that childhood life. But that time has passed, and it's gone now. This is mining country, and Musija's village is right next door to one. It's a collective center. Wartime emergency accommodation put up when about half Bosnia's population was displaced. It's taken a long time, but the government has gradually been shutting them down. These people are among 3,000 across the country still waiting to move. Those houses were built for, let's say, three to four months living, but they stayed much longer, 30 years. They are in really bad condition now. We are trying to give them better living conditions, but it's still not their home. The Dayton Accords brought peace in 1995, but froze new ethnic boundaries essentially on where front lines were. Right of return was simple enough for those going back to areas where their ethnic group was still the majority, but about 90,000 people remain internally displaced. It's not just the Dayton Peace Accords that gives people the right to return to the homes, the land, the lives they lost in the war. It's also enshrined in Bosnia's constitution. But the reality is, in this country's fractured political and ethnic landscape, the conditions just aren't there. Being moved from a collective center to a modern building is the realistic alternative. Rafija showed me hers. With heating, electricity and maintenance fees, it's more expensive. But for Rafija, there's no comparison. What I have here now means the world to me. Honestly, even if they offered me who knows how much money to go back, I wouldn't go.
