Nigeria's government has rescued 100 schoolchildren abducted last month from a Catholic school in Niger state, in one of the country's biggest mass kidnappings in recent years. The students arrived at the government house in Niger's capital Minna and were handed over to the state governor.

One hundred schoolchildren who were abducted from St Mary's Boarding School in Niger, Nigeria, have been released after being held captive for two weeks. The students, most of whom are between 10 and 17 years old, were taken to the Niger State Government House following their release.

Authorities have not disclosed details about the negotiations or whether a ransom was paid. The incident is part of a series of mass abductions in Nigeria that have drawn international attention, with some students and staff still unaccounted for. The freed children are undergoing medical checks, and efforts to recover the remaining captives continue.

On the 21st of November, 316 students and staff were taken from St Mary's Boarding School in an area of Nigeria plagued by insecurity. Most of the released were aged between 10 and 17 years old. Monday afternoon, the free students were taken to Niger State Government House. One of the students describes the ordeal. They gave us tampons that we should put it down, we should lie down and sleep. That we should not make much for them. Much remains unclear. Who took them and exactly how many are still held? And how did the government free them? So far there's been few answers. It's been common for both armed groups and criminal groups to engage in kidnappings to make quick cash. In the northeast, there's a long-running jihadist insurgency. While across the northwest, bandit groups attack and loot villages. But the scale of this event, along with a string of other mass abductions in November, drew world attention to the situation and pressure on the authorities. But the state governor is sounding optimistic. We wish to recover the remaining students that are still in captivity and by the grace of God, in a very short time from now, we're going to recover them, inshallah. For these children, the next step is to be checked over by medical professionals. Medical check-up will be very, very critical for them. And then if anything is discovered, any laboratory investigation is conducted and something is discovered, definitely they will need health care. All of which can't happen fast enough for the parents and community members waiting to be reunited with their children.
