The USDA recently cut funding to programs that supported local food purchases for schools and food banks in North Carolina. These programs provided over $1 billion annually nationwide and helped local farmers sell produce to schools and food banks, including Pine Knot Farms near Durham. 

Local officials and food bank representatives have expressed concern that the loss of funding will reduce access to fresh food for children and vulnerable populations, potentially forcing layoffs among local farmers and increasing food insecurity. The USDA stated that the program was initiated during the pandemic and is no longer deemed necessary.
