The warming waters off the coast of New England have contributed to a significant increase in the population of invasive green crabs, originally from Europe. These crabs, with few natural predators and the ability to survive harsh conditions, have become a major threat to native species such as clams and young lobsters, impacting local fisheries.

In response, some in the Massachusetts seafood industry are exploring ways to turn the green crab problem into a potential food solution. Fishermen are now harvesting green crabs in large quantities, and businesses are experimenting with products like seafood broth made from the crabs. Proponents believe that increasing demand for green crab products could help control their population and benefit the local ecosystem.
