New York City Comptroller and mayoral candidate Brad Lander was detained by ICE agents while attempting to escort a man from immigration proceedings. Lander reportedly locked arms with the man and demanded agents show a judicial warrant before being separated and handcuffed by ICE. Homeland Security officials accused Lander of assaulting law enforcement and impeding a federal officer, but he was released without being charged pending an investigation.

The incident comes amid a series of confrontations between Democratic officials and immigration authorities. Lander stated he was standing up for due process, while ICE maintains agents do not need a warrant to detain non-citizens in public spaces such as courthouses. The man Lander was assisting remains in ICE custody.
