The French consumer group UFC-Que Choisir has filed a legal complaint against Nestlé and several French government ministers after reports revealed that Perrier and other Nestlé water brands used illegal microfiltration techniques to purify spring water. The group also accuses lawmakers of failing to act to protect consumers, despite being aware of the issue since 2022. 

A whistleblower's report indicated that methods such as UV rays, iron sulphate, and improper filtration were used, making the 'natural mineral water' label misleading. The consumer group claims that at least 30% of French water brands have employed similar methods, some for decades. Nestlé maintains that these techniques do not pose a risk to consumers and attributes changes in water sources to climate change and urbanisation.
