Witnesses reported that people seeking aid were pepper-sprayed by guards and became trapped between locked gates and a wire fence, leading to suffocation and trampling.

The GHF, a U.S.-backed and Israel-supported group, stated that the incident was caused by a crowd surge instigated by armed agitators affiliated with Hamas, a claim Hamas has denied, instead blaming the GHF and Israeli military. The incident is part of a broader pattern of violence at aid sites in Gaza, with the U.N. Rights Office reporting hundreds of deaths near such locations in recent weeks.
