Players of Pokémon GO have contributed to the training of artificial intelligence by using an augmented reality scanning feature introduced in 2020. According to Niantic, the company behind the game, these scans are optional, require user consent, and are used to improve their visual positioning system by creating detailed 3D maps of the real world.

Niantic states that the data collected is submitted anonymously and is also used to train neural networks. The company’s terms of service inform users that their data may be reused to enhance technology, and Niantic also gathers data from other sources such as drones, robots, and satellites.
