Collaborative arrangements, such as leasing land and sharing equipment, are helping to boost productivity. Meanwhile, compensation payments are beginning for some displaced farmers as part of broader economic reforms, with both sides recognizing the complexities involved.

Among the fields of paprika, in the scorching heat, a fourth generation farmer and a once novice examine the upcoming crop. They're combining forces to revive Zimbabwe's agriculture sector, devastated by a land reform drive in the 2000s. At the time, thousands of white farmers were forced from their land, sometimes with deadly violence, as it was redistributed to the black majority. The controversial reform has been accused of cruelly evicting white farmers and pushing black Zimbabweans into poverty, even creating food shortages. Ultimately it led to the economic instability that exists today. Miriam was among those who received land, though at the time she admits she didn't know much about farming. At first some of the white farmers were angry, but we managed to talk to each other in good faith and move forward. They never let us down and said, you grab the land, let's see if you can farm it. Instead they brought their own equipment to come and help, which we felt was a nice gesture. Today Miriam's plot thrives. Her neighbour Daniel leases land from her. In return, he lends his tractors and expertise. Now some of those who had land confiscated are set to receive their first compensation payments, part of a wider plan to reform the economy. There's merit in both sides of the story. Those who invested into the farms and lost assets, it makes sense for them to get value for those assets back. And those who took on the assets because of having fought for the freedom and independence of the country. Miriam and Daniel hope other farmers, whether generational or relatively new, can look to them as inspiration, working together for the better of their country.
