With billions of U.S. dollars in aid hanging in the balance and his nightly address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made no mention of why he failed to appear by video during a classified briefing to U.S. senators on Tuesday. Democratic Majority Leader in the Senate Chuck Schumer only said something happened at the last minute to prevent Zelensky's appearance, and pointed the finger at Republicans for their refusal to approve more funding for Ukraine unless it's tied to beefing up security at the U.S.-Mexico border. If this fails because of border, that's not a bipartisan failure. That's a failure of the Republicans and the Republican leadership. The only reason they added border was because a lot of members of their hard right said they want border. But a lot of those same members aren't going to vote Ukraine no matter what is there. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine began in February of 2022, the U.S. Congress has authorized $111 billion in aid for Ukraine. In October, President Biden asked lawmakers to approve an additional $61.4 billion. And on Monday, the White House's budget director sent a stark letter to lawmakers, warning that funding for Ukraine would run out by the end of the year, saying, we are running out of money and nearly out of time. As winter arrives in Ukraine, again on Tuesday, the White House warned that Russia could win the war if lawmakers failed to act, but Republicans held firm on their demands. Now is the time to pay attention to our own border, in addition to these other important international concerns. Even if a deal is reached in the Senate, funding for Ukraine will be a tougher sell for the Republican-led House, where a growing number of Republicans remain wary of ongoing funding for Kiev.
